Texas Retina Associates welcomes board-certified ophthalmologist and retina specialist Ivan Castillo, MD, to its Waco office starting May 1, 2017. Dr. Castillo specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of macular degeneration, retinal tears and detachment, diabetic retinopathy, and macular holes. He comes to Texas Retina Associates from Retina Institute of California in Bakersfield, California. Prior to that, he was with Braverman-Terry-Oei Eye Associates in San Antonio, Texas.
Dr. Castillo is fluent in English and Spanish, and welcomes Spanish-speaking patients. He completed his fellowship in vitreo-retinal surgery at Retina & Vitreous of Texas in Houston, as well as a research fellowship in glaucoma at the Medical College of Virginia. Originally from Bogota, Colombia, Dr. Castillo graduated from medical school and completed an ophthalmology residency at the Universidad Militar Nueva Granada. A member of both the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists, he has presented his work at their meetings and has also published peer-reviewed articles in international journals, including Ophthalmology, American Journal of Ophthalmology and Survey of Ophthalmology.
