Texas Retina Associates’ Ashkan Abbey, MD, has published research in the medical journal Retina. Titled “Refractive Outcomes After Sutureless Intrascleral Fixation of Intraocular Lens with Pars Plana Vitrectomy,” the results of his work may help retina surgeons achieve more predictable and better desired refractive outcomes for this surgical technique that is used to correct a number of issues:
1. An artificial lens slipping out of place after cataract surgery
2. Eyes that had cataract surgery without the placement of an artificial lens
3. Cataracts that are too complicated for a standard cataract surgery due to the zonules (little bands in the eye that hold the lens in place) being too weak, causing the cataract to be unstable. This can be a result of trauma or hereditary diseases.
Dr. Abbey is a world leader in performing this surgical technique, and he also presented these results at the American Society of Retina Specialists 2020 Annual Meeting held virtually in July.
