Texas Retina Associates’ Ashkan M. Abbey, MD, taught a course on “Secondary IOL Techniques for Retinal Specialists” at this year’s AAO 2020 virtual meeting held November 14-17, 2020. With more than 32,000 members across the globe, the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) is the world’s largest association of eye physicians and surgeons. Their mission is to protect sight and empower lives by serving as an advocate for patients and the public, leading ophthalmic education and advancing the profession of ophthalmology.
Dr. Abbey’s course focused on multiple new techniques for secondary intraocular lens (IOL) placement that have recently emerged for retina specialists. He reviewed multiple different approaches to secondary lenses, including anterior chamber, scleral tunneled (with trocars or needles), intrascleral-sutured and iris-sutured IOL techniques. Preoperative considerations and intraoperative and postoperative complication management were also discussed. The course objective was for attendees to be able to utilize the various secondary IOL techniques.
