For the fifth year, Texas Retina’s Ashkan M. Abbey, MD, taught a continuing medical education (CME) course titled, “Secondary IOL Techniques for Retinal Specialists,” at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, held this year in Chicago, Illinois, October 18-21. Dr. Abbey taught the AAO 2024 course in partnership with colleagues from Mid-Atlantic Retina, Georgia Retina and Wills Eye Hospital.
Sometimes cataract surgery cases are complex and require a second surgery for lens insertion that is performed by a retina specialist. This procedure is called a secondary intraocular lens implant (IOL). Several new surgical techniques for secondary IOL have emerged in recent years. The AAO 2024 course reviewed different approaches, including anterior chamber, scleral tunneled (with trocars or needles), intrascleral-sutured and iris-sutured IOL techniques. The physicians also discussed preoperative considerations, and intraoperative and postoperative complication management.
Dr. Abbey serves as Texas Retina’s Director of Clinical Research for Dallas and cares for patients in our Dallas Main and Rockwall offices. You can learn more about him here.
