This past weekend, Texas Retina’s Robert C. Wang presented “Uveitis: Everything Everywhere All at Once” at the State of Texas Association of Rheumatologists (STAR)  2025 Annual Meeting held at the Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine, Texas. STAR works for the betterment of rheumatology practices and patients in Texas, providing evidence-based and practical medical education for its members.

Understanding Uveitis
In uveitis, the body’s immune system attacks the eye. It can occur in one eye or both eyes. A rare condition, uveitis can be acute and last for only a short time, or it can be chronic, requiring ongoing monitoring and treatment.

Early detection and treatment of uveitis are important. Left untreated, it can lead to permanent vision loss, retinal damage, cataracts, and glaucoma. Each patient’s treatment must be customized to control the level of inflammation and reduce possible side effects. Dr. Wang is one of only around 40 combined retina/uveitis specialists in the entire U.S.

While it is not always known what causes uveitis, people are more likely to get it if they have or have had an autoimmune or systemic inflammatory disease like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.

“Rheumatologists specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of systemic autoimmune conditions, so I often work closely with them to help bridge the gap in providing care for patients with uveitis,” explains Dr. Wang. “It’s important to keep them informed on how to identify potential uveitis cases so that we can achieve the best possible outcomes for our patients.”
