Texas Retina’s Diana M. Laura, MD, was featured in a recently released episode of the podcast Pupil Pod titled “Case Review: Retinopathy of Prematurity.” In this podcast hosted by Sila Bal, MD, MPH, Dr. Laura shares a case in which a premature infant girl of 22 weeks gestational age presents in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with respiratory distress, and there is concern she may also have retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).

A potentially blinding eye disease that occurs in some premature babies (those born before 31 weeks), ROP arises when abnormal blood vessels develop on a babys retina and can cause serious eye and vision problems. In the podcast, Dr. Laura explains the screening criteria for ROP in premature infants and reviews the identifying factors for the various stages of ROP. She also discusses information and findings from multiple studies on ROP management and treatment. You can access the full podcast episode here.

Dr. Laura provides care for a full range of vitreoretinal conditions, including ROP and other pediatric retinal diseases. She sees patients in Texas Retina’s Dallas Main, Rockwall and Wichita Falls offices and also cares for babies in the NICUs at both Baylor and Methodist Dallas hospitals.
