Texas Retina’s Ashkan M. Abbey, MD, and retired Texas Retina physician David Callanan, MD, were officially inducted into The Retina Society at the organization’s 57th Annual Scientific Meeting held September 11-15, in Lisbon, Portugal. They join Texas Retina physicians Gary Edd Fish, MD, and Rajiv Anand, MD, who are also members of The Retina Society along with retired Texas Retina physician Rand Spencer, MD.

About The Retina Society
The Retina Society was founded in 1968 exclusively for educational and scientific purposes concerning the diagnosis, care and treatment of diseases and injuries to the retina. The organization began as an outgrowth of alumni meetings of Retina Associates, a retina practice founded in Boston in 1951 by Charles L. Schepens. Dr. Schepens is credited with establishing retina surgery as a sub-specialty.

Collaborating to Improve Care of Retinal Diseases
“The Retina Society is a preeminent ophthalmic subspecialty society, and I am honored and humbled to have been selected for membership and to serve alongside so many of my current and former Texas Retina colleagues,” shares Dr. Abbey. “With around 550 members worldwide, The Retina Society facilitates collaboration and networking with global leaders to improve our understanding and care of retinal diseases.”

Dr. Abbey serves as Texas Retina’s director of clinical research for Dallas and cares for patients in the Dallas Main and Rockwall offices. You can learn more about him here.

Dr. Callanan currently serves as chief medical officer and senior vice-president at Aviceda Therapeutics, a late clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on harnessing the promise of immune cells’ natural checkpoints, which modulate innate and adaptive immune activity that is dysregulated in a diverse range of diseases characterized by chronic non-resolving inflammation.
